maia - Center for Applied AI in Medicine

Fraunhofer and Charité/BIH have started a strategic collaboration in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) & Intelligent sensor technology in medicine, establishing a Charité-Fraunhofer Center, maia, Center for Applied AI in Medicine.

At maia in Berlin, innovative digital procedures and technologies for clinical healthcare will be developed and validated under real conditions in a clinical environment. The focus will be on clinical benefits with the aim of integrating developed solutions directly into everyday clinical practice at Charité.

maia supports the paradigm shift of digital transformation towards partially automated and individualized, precise and affordable healthcare. Accordingly, maia promotes:

  • Procedures and technologies for individualized patient care
  • AI methods, e.g. in image analysis, early detection and predictive pattern recognition, for data-based precision medicine
  • Intelligent sensor technology for recording vital data and determining condition for prevention, diagnostics, therapy and aftercare
  • Methods and technologies for work and decision support for clinical staff
  • Clinic-integrated validation of new technologies and the transfer of research into practice
  • Joint utilization of developed technologies to strengthen the medical technology innovation ecosystem

In a first pilot project use cases in cardiology and oncology have been addressed. The project is headed by Fraunhofer MEVIS and Charité with participation of several Fraunhofer institutes and Charité clinics.

A more detailed update will follow on the maia homepage (coming soon).
